The Secret is in the Dirt – Long Game Golf Lesson

120 Timeless Golf Lessons

This phrase was coined by the famous Ben Hogan. There are several interpretations of it. You have to work hard and dig deep to improve, is one of them. Well, that will not hurt for sure. I think he said it with a little tongue in cheek.

Obviously there is not one secret single element to a great golf swing, because it is such a complex movement made out of different parts. On the other hand, you can also take the
quote literally. If you take a look at the divot of a shot, you can tell quite a lot about the swing path and how the ball was hit.

If the divot is pointing to the right, you swung from the inside. If it is pointing to the left, your club came from the outside. If the divot starts in front of where the ball was laying you probably hit it fat. That means your deepest point of your swing path was in front of the ball.

When the divot is barely to see you probably hit the ball thin. A rule of thumb is that a perfect divot is in the shape of a dollar note that is pointing slightly to the right. With the divot being a great indicator for your swing, you can actually use it as a training aid.

Get Started With Swing Man Golf Today

Today you work on your full swing by trying to produce all kinds of divots. Get to the practice tee and start swinging away.

Drawing a line can help to assess your divots better.

Try to deliberately produce the described divots. Do not use golf balls at the beginning of this exercise. Once you are sure that you can produce a specific divot you can try to hit a ball. Just do the same swing and see what happens for each divot. This is a great exercise to get a feel for the swing path and which movements produce which kind of results. Obviously do this on the practice tee as you do not want to butcher the course.

  • Produce all kinds of divots with your full swing. Do not use golf balls at first. Focus on the divot you want to produce.
  • When you are confident that you can produce a specific divot (left, right, fat, thin), try the same swing with a golf ball.
