In fact it is one of the best shots for beginners to learn and use off the tee. And it is actually pretty easy to perform once you tried it a few times.

It is usually played into wide and open fairways that lead into an open green.

It is also really useful when the wind is strong as the trajectory is relatively low compared to a normal shot.

To perform the punch shot go to the range and try the following.

You can think of the punch like a hard and long chip shot.

Adjust your normal address position more towards that of a chip shot.

To do that choke down on the grip and position the ball back towards the center of your stance.

Your hands should be forward and your weight should be shifted more to your left side. Otherwise you keep everything square and aligned like with your normal swing.

The punch gets its name from the fast swing motion.

You want to move your club back and through in a speedy fashion almost like you would be throwing a boxing jab.

Keep your wrists out of it and stay low to the ground throughout your swing. On your finish your hands should not be far from your left knee.

So you do not swing through to your regular finish, but do more of a reaching motion instead.

This shot will give you a decent amount of distance while making it easy to maintain your accuracy.

If you are currently fighting a slice or a hook off the tee with your driver or fairway woods, this shot is a great option while you are working on your swing.

The only tricky thing about the punch is that you have to get a new feel for your distance, but you can work that all out on the range with a bucket of golf balls.

  • Practice the punch shot on the range.
  • Figure out your distances with the punch for all your clubs.
